As of January 1, 2024, large publicly listed companies in the European Union are required to report their CO2 emissions and sustainability measures. This new CSRD directive helps companies improve their impact on the environment and society. For many businesses, especially those in the transport sector, this means significant steps will be needed to reduce their CO2 emissions. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by switching to Bio-LNG.
Why Bio-LNG?
Every fuel has a specific CO2 emission profile, but Bio-LNG offers a unique opportunity to drastically reduce these emissions. With Bio-LNG, you can even reduce CO2 emissions by up to 200% compared to diesel!
The table below shows the CO2 emissions of various fuels:
Fuel | Unit | Energy in MJ per Unit | CO2 Emissions WTT (well-to-tank), g CO2 eq/MJ* | CO2 Emissions TTW (tank-to-wheel), g CO2 eq/MJ* | CO2 Emissions WTW (well-to-wheel), g CO2 eq/MJ* | % Reduction compared to diesel |
Diesel (fossil) | Liter | 36,6 | 22,48 | 73,06 | 95,54 | |
LNG | Kilo | 49 | 14,41 | 60,10 | 74,51 | -22% |
Bio-LNG from manure | Kilo | 49 | -100 | 3,59 | -96,41 | -200% |

How Bio-LNG saves CO2
The CO2 emissions of fuels consist of two parts:
1. Well-to-Tank (WTT): This is the emission released during the production of the fuel and the transport of the fuel to the filling station. At Rolande, we use the actual emission factors from ISCC-certified Bio-LNG producers and transport companies that deliver Bio-LNG to our filling stations.
2. Tank-to-Wheel (TTW): This part of the emissions is released during the use of Bio-LNG in the truck. Although some CO2 is still emitted, it’s less than 5% of the diesel emissions.
Adding these two values together gives the total CO₂ emissions, also known as Well-to-Wheel (WTW). This takes into account the entire lifecycle of the fuel – from production to consumption – and is the key metric for environmental impact.
The power of Bio-LNG: from manure to negative CO2 emissions
Did you know that Bio-LNG produced from manure can even have negative CO2 emissions? That’s because we capture the methane from manure in our Bio-LNG facilities and convert it into Bio-LNG. What remains, the digestate, is returned to the farmer as a soil improver. This prevents methane from being released during the storage of manure or when spreading manure on the land. This is a clear win-win for both the environment and your sustainability goals. Discuss with your carbon accountant how to report these negative emissions.
Conclusion: your next step towards sustainability
For transporters and shippers who are serious about CO2 reduction, Bio-LNG is the perfect choice. With a potential CO2 reduction of up to 200%, it’s the key solution to achieve your sustainability goals and make significant steps towards fossil-free and sustainable road transport.
