LNG

The transport market is changing. We know that transport can and must be greener. After 100 years of use, diesel is increasingly being replaced by alternative, cleaner fuels. Rolande is convinced that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is the most sustainable and economical alternative to diesel. We consider LNG to be the fuel that will clear the way for Bio-LNG.

Working on cleaner transport now

Rolande is proving that this is possible, and we are certainly not alone in this. LNG as a transport fuel is gaining more and more ground. And rightly so. Greener transport is essential for a cleaner world.

Liquefied natural gas

Liquefied natural gas

LNG is liquefied natural gas (methane), which has an extremely low temperature. Because of this, the volume of natural gas is reduced by 600 times, making it an ideal fuel for the transport sector.

Driving on LNG offers many advantages

  • LNG trucks are even cleaner than those with Euro VI diesel engines.
  • A CO2 reduction of 17% can be achieved with LNG
  • LNG trucks are up to 75% quieter than those with diesel engines
  • LNG is not new; click here to view the history of LNG.
  • Driving on LNG is cost-effective for every single kilometre.

Why switch to LNG

Switching to LNG means a cleaner, quieter, and cheaper truck. Several truck manufacturers are currently supplying powerful LNG vehicles which, in terms of performance, are not at all inferior to diesel engines.

Waar komt de lng van rolande vandaan

Where does Rolande’s LNG come from?

Rolande obtains its LNG from the Gate Terminal located in the port of Rotterdam, among others. The Gate Terminal is the primary LNG import terminal in the Netherlands, with access to North-western Europe. The liquefied natural gas is transported here by ship from the United States, Russia, Qatar and Norway and is in liquid form due to having been cooled to -160 °C. The natural gas is stored at this temperature at the Gate Terminal and is then used in liquid form as fuel for trucks and shipping.

LNG is the steppingstone to Bio-LNG

LNG is the first and best step towards Bio-LNG, liquefied biogas. Rolande produces Bio-LNG, which is gained from biogas from landfill waste, wastewater treatment plants or fermentation installations. The biogas is collected, cleaned and liquefied. This process ensures a CO₂ reduction of no less than 80% over the entire chain. The advantage: biogas is fossil-free, which makes driving, even for heavy-duty road transport, very sustainable. In contrast to the production and transportation of LNG, the production of Bio-LNG is new. The step to driving on LNG and the roll-out of an international network of LNG refuelling stations is essential to be able to market Bio-LNG on a large scale.

As part of the BIOLNG4EU project, Rolande will build installations where Bio-LNG will be produced in the coming years, to support increasing fossil-free transportation.
